PC: A good horror story may keep most of us awake at night, but a scary video game will ensure that we won’t sleep for weeks. Gameranx stepped into the wayback machine to create this tidy list of the top 2. Update . All three games (which we've combined into a single entry) deserve a spot on this list. We turn down the lights, don our headphones and want the game to make us jump out of their seats. We want to cry out, whimper and scream at what we are putting ourselves through. The games that stick with you long after you’ve turned your console or computer off and when you do coat you with an inescapable dread. The cleverness in design and subtlety of the game's mechanics provide for some very potent scares. Silent Hills / P. T. Developed by both Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro, the game was intended to immerse players in what Silent Hills has to offer. Looking through the first- person view, the game consists mainly of a corridor that the player walks down repeatedly. April 9, 2015 Top 25 Best Horror Games of All Time. Best Horror games for PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360 & PC: A good horror story may keep most of us awake at night. It’s a lot scarier than it sounds, honestly. Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs . It's not a literal adaptation of the book, which was famous for its portrayal of the atrocities committed in Chicago's slaughterhouses. SCP- 8. 70. SCP- 8. SCP holds within its archives. For those not in the know, SCP stands for . Check out the best scary games in our list of the most frightening, monster infested adventures you can play right now. What constitutes a good horror game? A lot of times it is a complex mixture of atmosphere and thrills that produces some of the best scary games. Breaking news: the Sega Genesis is coming back. The old-school console is back in production and pre-orders are already in place, just in time for Christmas. Restraint enables designers to create incredible. The organization works to secure and contain anomalous objects, codenamed, . Any failure to observe it—even for a split second—will cause the doll to move towards you and kill you. That makes up the core of the game. As a survivor, you have to manage your eye- blinks and keep it always in sight or it'll kill you. Sanitarium. No, it's not based off the Metallica song. Sanitarium is a horror adventure game where you play as an amnesiac patient who arrived at a mental asylum after his car crashed and is now trying to figure out what is going on. The mystery doesn’t lie in the titular facility, but in the worlds trapped inside your head. The settings pay homage to the classic Universal horror films of the 1. Scratches. Scratches is an adventure horror game from Argentinean developer Agustin Cordes, released in 2. It places you in the first person perspective of Michael Arthate, a mystery author seeking seclusion to work on his next book. But after he’s moved in he discovers that the house contains a secret past, and he can literally hear scratches all around the house. You’ll be scared of sounds and the cinematic tricks of the trade as you end up committing all the things you yell at characters in movies not to do. Dead Space. What can be said about Dead Space that hasn’t already been said? It was the game to turn certain monster fighting conventions on their head. Players trained to aim for the head soon found themselves out of their depth, as the only way to kill the Necromorphs were to cut their limbs off, the same limbs being slashed in your face ready to cut it off at a moment’s notice. So not only was Dead Space the master of the jump scare, it gave you the uneasy feeling the whole time you were in it that the ship would fall apart right under your feet. Silent Hill. Back in 1. Play. Station wasn’t up to snuff—as Konami discovered—to get their entry into the survival horror genre. Thank goodness for that. The draw distance was so short that they had to add Silent Hill’s trademark fog that obscured everything and made you rely on the sounds around you. It forced you out into the street with only two bullets in your gun—the sound of flying monsters growing louder or fading away as you ambled across the deserted thoroughfare. You were always outmatched in any fight. Seeing the monsters only made things worse. Obs. Cure. Obs. Cure focused on a group of five high school seniors who stumble upon a laboratory where biological experiments are being performed. The students must then fight their way out in order to warn the remaining student body. The enemies are sensitive to light, with direct sunlight destroying them. Flashlights can be used to slightly weaken the monsters and the black aura surrounding them. The scarcity of ammunition, health items and save reels were ripped from the early Resident Evil games, but Obs. Cure adds a whole new dimension. The Nintendo Wii was one of the most successful consoles of all time. So which games do we think were the best to be released on the system? If a character dies it doesn’t end the game, as the story simply continues without them. However, you will grow quite attached to the characters, and frankly you’ll need every hand available to survive to the end. I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. A cookie to those who recognize the game or the 1. A super computer called AM 1. Final War and gathered the last five survivors into its underground catacombs to torture them for all eternity for the simple reason it hates humanity with every neuron of its circuits. That’s if the player was ethical throughout the game. You don’t want to know what happens otherwise. Slender. Some might argue that Slender isn't so much of a game as it is a short, interactive experience that's built right into the browser—but I'd argue otherwise. The game's platform has no merit on whether it's a 'game' or not, and the fact that you'll need a fresh pair of pants when you're done playing it is about the only thing that matters when you play it. Siren / Siren: Blood Curse. The rural village where human sacrifice once took place is now populated by the nightmares of Japanese folklore with creatures that lie somewhere between ghost and zombie. The village is always dark, the denizens always murderous and had nonlinear story telling complete with interweaving narratives with the different characters. Both the games feature a strong emphasis on stealth, meaning you have to hide rather than fight. Furthermore, there is the sightjacking mechanic where—with a tune of the analog stick—you can look through the enemy’s eyes as they approach the very closet you’re hiding in. Rule of Rose. This psychological horror game is a different sort than the others on this list. There is no supernatural element; just very screwed up kids being psychopathically horrible to one another—but most importantly to you. You play 1. 9- year- old Jennifer who becomes trapped with no memory in a world ruled by young girls who have established a class hierarchy based on the cruelty displayed to others. Condemned: Criminal Origins. Condemned is a detective story that was overlooked when it first came out early in the 3. With both horror and brawler mechanics, it was the first true “next- gen” horror title. Hobos and junkies jump out from the shadows to bludgeon you with anything they can get their hands on, and you have to do the same. While the game feels rather “out there”, the crime investigations and crunch of the bones keeps it close enough to reality to be truly unsettling. That’s all that really needs to be said about this game. Little girls are scary, especially psychic little girls with long dark hair covering their faces who appear in the middle of empty corridors. As for the game itself, the shooting is great and the AI smart, but it’s the nightmare moments that really shine. The world goes topsy- turvy and your characters sees things that aren’t there out of the corner of his vision. The slight sway of his gun and the shallowness of his breathing during and after these nightmare events make you believe they are happening and the character is vulnerable to having his mind fucked. Haunting Ground. Fiona wakes up in a cage after a car accident and little memory of what happened before she woke up (this seems to be a recurring theme with horror games). Fiona finds an ally in the form of the dog Hewie, but he will only follow your commands if you treat him well and keep up his interest. Together, you have to solve puzzles, avoid your pursuers and survive the night. While other games will give you resource scarcity, Haunting Ground doesn’t give you any resources whatsoever. You have no choice but to run and hide. There are enemies that will relentlessly hunt you down, giving you a very strong signal that you’re the final course on their menu. Silent Hill 4: The Room. Silent Hill 4 is an odd entry for the Silent Hill series, because it’s the only one that doesn’t take you to the titular town. Instead, you are locked in your room in your apartment building and have to find your way out. The room acts as your hub and your safe haven through the game, as you travel through various supernatural locations filled with the ghosts, monsters and general mind- fuckery. The Silent Hill series in general is well known for these things. It teaches you the rules of the world and then it betrays you; ghosts invade your safe haven launching you into a new direction of horror. Suddenly, nowhere is safe. Penumbra series. The series is full of an atmosphere of horror, and the setting is as much a character as the unfortunate man whom you play. You will spend half the time being terrified of nothing and the music, sound and environments will have you jumping at empty dark corners, flickering lights and your own paranoid imagination. It knows you’ll scare yourself stupid so long as it hangs its Sword of Damocles over your head. Resident Evil 2. While the first Resident Evil game invented the formula, it is difficult to take seriously thanks to the poor voice acting; you’ll end up laughing during any serious moments. Resident Evil 2 may not have great voice acting, but you won’t burst out laughing. It also contains a superior set up and pulls better scares. The first game was memorable for a number of scenes—with dogs bursting through the windows, but the scene happens in a bright hallway during normal gameplay. Resident Evil 2 ups the ante by pulling the same stunt in a room you can barely see while your fussing with the inventory. It was the single greatest jump scare in gaming and stays with you long afterwards. That scene is simply emblematic of how the game pulls off its scares better than the original. Guest. In the early 9. Guest was a game where its implementation wasn’t campy, but rather unsettling and done so on purpose. Best Video Games of All Time - Top Ten Listnaruto. Regardless of genre, platform, and age; these are the greatest video games ever created. The game is very long, so you like never get bored of it. Plus, it's got many cleverly thought out puzzles that are fun to solve, ^^ lastly, the atmosphere is amazing! Very, very well made game! This game is amazing. It requires you to think and is not afraid to not hold your hand and throw you into a game with no help. It is an accomplishment to beat this game. It is timeless and so uniquely difficult (yet rewarding) that to not have this rated as the best video game ever would be a lie. I love how it makes you think for yourself and figure things out because many games today do not do that. Most games walk you through step by step and fool you into thinking that you accomplished anything challenging. Dumb people like dumb games like that, but I believe that the challenge of this game scares a lot of dumb people away. Dumb people who couldn't really even apriciate this game for what it is in the first place. Have you ever played Call of Duty after playing Zelda? It makes you feel like an idiot. Seeing the easiness and mindlessness in such a widely popular game after playing a game so challenging is enlightening. Games like Call of Duty or Halo walk you through step by step, .. You know, Call Of Duty and Halo DO require skill. You don't simply run in and shoot, as you will be massacred (unless you are playing on the lowest difficulty/2nd lowest in some cases). Try a Call of Duty game on hardened or veteran difficulty or a halo game on legendary or heroic. Sure, there is no puzzle solving in it, but that's not for these 2 iconic first person shooters. Not hating on this game, as I have never played it. Might try it out on an emulator sometime- Ballistc. One of the few games I still play and by far the best. Tomb Raider was good but nothing like this beast. Brawl. One of the only games left in the world (excluding Mario Kart) where you can go around to your mates for some good, fun gaming. One of the better looking games on the Wii, the single player is decent and the replayability is near endless.. But it's the multiplayer that gives it my vote. There is no way anything can possibly change my opinion of this game. That is, until they come out with the next Smash Bros. Game. SSBB is my stress reliever and my life. The multiplayer's awesome, and the Subspace Emissary lasts for an impressive 9 hours. Best game of all time no obt! I could play this for as long as eternity. V 2. 58 Comments. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Laugh out loud its not even out yet but I know that this game will obliterate any other video game so that's why I'm casting my vote now because this game will be the best and there is no doubt in my mind that it will be amazing. No matter what anyone says. Though it will be released (on an EPIC date: 1. Elder Scrolls game will come out. The game that brought me into the world of gaming. Beforehand I had only ever really played very casual games (and still do.. I love FIFA) as I was too young to really get into and appreciate deep stories and immerse myself in the lore of any beautifully crafted universes. I was 1. 3 when this came out, and it will forever be my favourite for introducing me to such a vast world where I can hunt dragons one day and negotiate with extra terrestrial life the next. When other games render this obsolete, with better graphics, more awe inspiring foes and even more secrets to uncover, nothing will stop me from having an occasional urge to check on my Nord hero in the hope of reliving some of that initial magic. This is the best game out their because it revolutionized video games as a whole, plus has the most content other than no mans scam. V 2. 21 Comments. Minecraft. Minecraft inspires creativity. Minecraft has EVERYTHING. It has rpg elements, it has fighting, it has the undead, it has building, it has farming, it has exploration, it has survival, it has horror, and most importantly, it has an amazing online multiplayer mode. One thing I personally love about it is the retro graphics. This game is easy to get, and it's easy to pick up and play. This game is simply perfect. Some people hate it because of the graphics, but they don't realize the creators intended for it to be blocky. It gives Minecraft it's own style, and it's very easy to build with. This has to be the greatest video game of all time because it allows you to create your inner self. It is the best selling video game of all time, excluding Tetris. Heck, you can even make a version of Tetris in Minecraft using command blocks. In fact, almost any game can be made in Minecraft, including Chess, Duck Hunt, Team Fortress 2, and Super Mario Bros. The Vanilla game is an experience you will have a hard time finding reasons to ignore. Say you want to build a giant fort out of emeralds, iron, and gold. Or you can make a crappy hut made of dirt, wooden planks, and cobwebs but has a secret layer underneath. You can fit a scale model of the PLANET 7 times in Minecraft! Or, you can replicate your entire country, state, or province. You can make a fort and create booby traps for incoming zombies, skeletons, spiders, and of course, the dreaded creeper. That's why Minecraft is AMAZING: you can do ANYTHING you want. There are no rules, no limitations, and no restrictions. You .. more. Minecraft, the best game ever. Make an enchanting table to enchant your tools to mine faster, dig faster, chop faster or make your sword more damage. Make armor to protect you, also enchant it for greater protection. Make anything with the best Jewels you mine. Have a pet animal including .. Oh god it's another crazy kid. In Minecraft, you CANNOT do quests, missions, etc. In Minecraft you CANNOT create your own type of creature. In Minecraft you CANNOT do live action speech, not text, speech. List goes on - IAm. Not. ARobot. I would play this everyday! V 5. 23 Comments. Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. Best game of all time with best features and even though mediocre graphics still enough for everyones liking. The graphics are . These were great back then. Eight years late? Mate this game will last a century. This is THE game. I can assure you that hundreds of thousands players still play this awesome game. You can virtually do anything. The missions are fun. There is multiplayer available for download(mta. THIS IS THE BEST GAME.! Mario kicks tomb raider's ass. No one can forget this game. The stars, the levels, the Bowser bosses. This game is awesome! This is my favorite game and it always will be! Why on earth is this game not higher on the list? Its way better than Call of Duty 4. This DS game compares to the N6. Other than MW2 and Skyrim Nothing comes close. It won Game of the Year but it is still underrated. The story is absolutely amazing and actually covers a lot of life morals like racism, family, freedom, etc. Multiplayer never gets old too. Still an active game years after its release. Hell this should be in the top 5 at least. This game has a amazing story with characters that will stick to you till the end. The environment is beautiful and has so many things to do. Look I can go on forever about how great this game is and how no other game can touch its amazing story. V 6. 5 Comments. 8Halo 3. People always ask the question ? It isn't the multiplayer, the gameplay, the campaign, or anything else that makes halo so great as how perfectly it combines all those things together. Halo's campaign; the gameplay and storyline blew my mind. It's a game that will give you goosebumps throughout it, but will chill you to the bone with it's unforgettable ending (includes after- credits). You sit there in awe and you can't say anything. I couldn't find the worss to describe that feeling. It arguably has one of the greatest gaming storylines in history, and in my opinion, the best storyline in a game series. Halo 3 is also known for having one of the best FPS online multiplayer's to date. With all around outstanding game modes and maps that keep you searching for more. What makes halo 3's multiplayer so great is the fact that everybody, even starters have an even chance of being the best in the .. I have more great memories playing this game, with and without friends, single player or multiplayer, than any other game I've ever played. The only con I can think of was that fact that the story was a bit.. Rushed, but that's only because Microsoft forced Halo 2 out of the gates before the campaign was done, so they had to cram it all into 3. Amazing game overall. Arguably the best game from the Halo Franchise and also quite possibly the greatest FPS of all time. The online for this game is still being played all around the world, and it is still selling a lot of units. On the first day of its release Halo 3 reached $1. United States alone, and sold 3. World. Wide in the first two weeks and was dubbed the Best- selling Video Game of 2. I think halo is the best fps series of all time. V 9. 8 Comments. 9Grand Theft Auto VThis game is awesome everything about it! I don't know where to start so I won't! I love this game. Why the heck isn't this #1 yet!? Grand Theft Auto V truly lived up to the hype, and deserves the title BEST GAME EVER MADE.
